Summary: Read the Book....Pass the Test
Comment: I just returned from passing the PMP on my first try, and Rita's guide was basically my only study guide. This book is easy to read and understand. I appreciated her positive approach on encouraging to understand and follow many of the PMBOK basics.
The test questions could bit a little tricky, but Rita provides some good explanations and gets you to think a little harder. Don't waste your time and money buying and/or reading the PMBOK.

Summary: Overrated, unnecessarily bloated, condescending style, but still unquestionably useful
Comment: This review is for the 5th edition of the book.
I used this book together with the PMBOK and passed the exam in the first try.
The content of the book is unquestionable useful and good and will help one prepare and pass the PMP exam, especially given the fact that the PMBOK by itself is a hard read and does not contain all that one needs to know for the exam.
I found the book to be way longer than it needs to be and unnecessarily bloated with repetition and useless exercises (like the process game, and others like that). The reading is very easy regardless and quite simple to "digest".
I found Rita's style very arrogant and unnecessarily patronizing to the point of becoming annoying and pointless after a while. It does not make any sense to me why she's doing it, other than she's just arrogant perriod and takes pleasure in doing it... it has no value in my view. Early on in my reading, after the first 2 chapters or so, I got so annoyed that I wanted to return the book! I just did not have the time to look and wait for getting a better book. I am sure there are other ones better out there. After a while, I got used to her style and just ignored the junk and her patronizing attitude.
I also found the book to be quite poorly organized, and in my view, the fact that it does not follow the PMBOK structure closely and in quite a few instances deviates from it slightly by adding new processes and using
different names does not help much either.
Regardless, she makes many good points with which I do agree. For instance, the fact that passing the PMP is not about memorization, but about truly understanding the concepts and how things fit together. She covers very well many aspects that are not covered in the PMBOK in sufficient details, such as the earn value calculation, network diagrams and critical path related issues and calculations, etc. She also has many good, illustrative examples on these topics and on others.
I did find many of her review questions irritating, but they are close to what you'll get on the PMP exam, so they are very useful in the end actually, so just get used to them. She has many good advices and rules about how to go about finding the right answer, and not just that, but about how to become a better PM in the end.
In the end, I did learned a lot from the book, it helped me passed the exam, and become a better PM - without question.

Summary: Not sure why the critical reviews
Comment: I read all the reviews last night before I took the PMP exam today. All of a sudden I thought that I had been studying the wrong book or that Rita's book wasn't good enough. So I got all psyched out that I wasn't ready.
Well, I passed today WITH only the Rita book. The only other thing I've supplemented with is some online practice exams by my company and those on websites. Besides Rita's book the most helpful tool was having an online exam tell you why an answer is right and wrong so that you can learn from your mistakes.
In summary, I though Rita's book was awesome. I'd just sign-up for some reputable online practice exams that allows "study mode" (where you get details on the answers). Otherwise, great book.
It came recommended to me. Don't read all the negative reviews. It makes you OVER prepared in my opinion. You get a certificate for passing. You don't get anything more for passing in 90% or even 80%.

Comment: A must for people who prepare for PMP. I got certified and thanks to this book I am a Project Manager right now.
This book not just tells you how to pass it also recommends what you should do in practice.
