Summary: simplify
Comment: Once you get past the learning curve, this remote is fantastic. The biggest advantage for my setup is being able to fine tune the signal out length of time. All of the IR signals are routed through a Xantech dinky link to my equipment located remotely, so I need the equipment to receive the signals the first time. (ex. if I press system 1, which is programmed to turn all devices on, if 1 device does not turn on it throws a wrench into the whole system since I cannot see it to verify on/off)

Computer setup is mandatory vs. manual programming. Much faster and easy to make changes. The instructions really don't explain the process very well, so play around with it and see just what this remote is capable of. It is very impressive once you figure out what you can do with it.

Summary: Stupid software
Comment: Once again I am disgusted with sony! I DON'T have windows, but I must if I am going to program this remote. Everything sony does is done just well enough to get it out to sell. If it doesn't work the way the consumer needs it to, well stupid you for buying it. As much as this remote would help with the 10 remotes that clutter my end table, I can't use it because sony doesn't have software for Mac users.

Summary: Timer function needs improvement
Comment: I bought this remote to avoid having to buy a new DVR with a HDTV tuner - so the timer function was the important feature for me. I am controlling a Pioneer DVR-640 and a HD convert box - Insignia NS-DXA1-APT. Now, I program about 12 shows on the DVR, and there are 8 timer slots on the Sony remote. The problem is for the Sony remote ON and OFF are separate events, so only 4 shows can be actually programmed! It can have separately named projects with their own timer programs, so that might help a little to overcome the small number of timer slots. I have to reconnect to the PC to swap the timer programs. The timer programming task is OK using the PC to set the events, but the task looks quite complex to do this by remote only - something like 13 steps for each of the ON and OFF events.

I found the following problems during programming: 1. I could not get it to recognize the type of the remote of any of my four devices automatically, instead I had to either guess at the preset code or manually program each key individually. 2. I found that some of the keys set by entering a preset code work ok individually, but not in a macro. If you have problems getting macros to work, try having the Sony remote learn the keys individually (delete the preset for the key first).

There is no printed manual provided so that means a lot of window swapping trying to read the manual in one window and work the program in another.

Comment: For sure you have to read the manual to understand how to program the remote unit. Make use of the setup CD to program your remote can prove easier via PC than manually learn the code from remote controllers. With PC setup, you can maximise the use of program xpress and airslide function.

The setup CD software able to store/backup the setting in case you lose the setting when changing battery.

Not recommended for consumer that prefer a off-the-shelf gadget and use it right-away.
